A Film Fanatic's Guide to Sick Days

WORDS BY NIKKI BULLOCK / @NIKKINOUSE

We've all been there: you wake up one morning and you can already tell the next couple of days are going to be rough. Whether it's due to a sore throat, pollen season, or just a mental health day, we all have sick days. Lucky for you, dear reader, I happen to be an expert in how to utilize the full potential of these days. So, here is my guide on how to make the best of some of the worst days.

First you will need these materials:
 - a blanket, the fuzzier the better
 - your favorite drink whether it's coffee, tea, or water, have a glass of it
 - a cozy pair of pajamas
 - a plate/bowl of your favorite snack
Lastly and probably most importantly:
 - a terrific movie

This is where my expertise comes in. After years of sick days, I have hand selected the best movies for you to watch on your day off.

First up, Fantastic Mr. Fox, a classic and one that can make any bad day better. Starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep and directed by Wes Anderson, it doesn't get much better than this. Unless you have Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in one movie which my next pick just so happens to have.

10 Things I Hate About You: a modern twist on Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," that captures the 90's and teen angst beautifully. From having heartthrob Heath Ledger in it to including a feminist protagonist, this movie has all the makings to get you up. Plus, who doesn't love a good teen love story?

Speaking of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the next film on my list is (500) Days of Summer. This film is about a socially awkward, yet extremely relatable guy (Joseph Gordon Levitt) going through every day life and how he falls in love with a girl (Zooey Deschanel). This movie has always been near and dear to my heart due to the fact that it portrays what love is really like, that it's not always perfect like something out of the notebook. If your sick day is due to a broken heart I highly recommend watching this movie.

Onto the next! Now, if you like science fiction, Jared Leto, romance, and ideas that make your brain hurt, then this is the movie for you my friend, and it's on Netflix! Mr. Nobody is a movie that will make you think just as hard as you would have in school. When I first watched this movie, it changed my whole outlook on life and it might do the same for you. If that's something you might need, watch this movie. I mean if you want.

For my final movie, I will leave you with one of my all-time favorites directed by one of my all-time favorite directors. Howl's moving Castle is a cinematic masterpiece like any movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This movie will give you a lapse from reality as you watch. With powerful messages, lighthearted comedy, and a beautifully composed score, this movie will act as medicine for your soul. In fact, I suggest you really watch any movie from Studio Ghibli.

I hope this guide has helped make your unwell day a little brighter and a little better. So grab that bowl of popcorn, flip on that TV, and settle in for a day of binge watching and rejuvenation.
