I Read the News Today, Oh Boy

WORDS BY ZOE ALLEN / @EOZALLEN
INSPIRED BY EVENTS IN BRUSSELS AND ALL OVER THE WORLD

On 7 January we were Charlie
On 13 November we were Paris.
On 22 March we were Brussels
Why on 10 October were we not Ankara?
Our Western friends will check in on Facebook
and let us know that they're ok.
Downing Street will raise the Belgian flag
in solidarity with its European counterpart.
These European counterparts remained voiceless when
many lives were taken at the hands of terrorists in Turkey.
We cannot see beyond the bounds of Western Europe
it is uncomfortable for us,
but why?
We visit Turkey on our Christmas breaks and summer vacations
but their skin is darker than ours (gasp)
so this (somehow?) translates to
"not requiring the sympathy that we give to those with paler complexions".
Turkey is attacked by ISIS too! Turkey is an ally of the United States!
Our lack of sympathy for these Muslim people will simply
radicalize more terrorists.
When Ted Cruz calls for "patrol of Muslim neighborhoods"
he is simply deepening the hatred and dividing us.
Our indifference is fueling terrorist groups like ISIS,
and no,
it does not make us stronger.
It shows our flaws as people, how divided we are,
how bigoted and Islamophobic and stupid we are.

So I will pray for Brussels, and Charlie, and Paris
but I will pray for Ankara and those who do not have a voice.
I will pray for the world,
God knows we need it.

I will read the news tomorrow and hope things get better.

Author's note: I would like to make it clear that I do not speak for the Muslim community, but simply as a white bystander who is horrified with the bigotry and passiveness that I am seeing.
