What a treat we all had last night! Here in the UK, the Oscars are unfortunately happening while we are all fast asleep, so waking up to all of the outfits and winners feels like Christmas morning—which is, of course, the most spectacular feeling in the world.
This year at the Academy Awards, there were many highs, and sadly some lows when it came to the fashion choices. (Also, the fact that Boyhood didn't win best picture was rather disappointing, but that's for another time.)

Here are some of the best and worst dressed at last night's Oscars chosen by us at WRITTEN CITIZEN.

Worst

Nicole Kidman

I feel bad for bashing one of the world's most beloved actresses, but she just wasn't a fashion winner at the 2015 Academy Awards. The Australian born star opted for a shimmering duel toned Louis Vuitton gown with a red belt. Although her hair and makeup were stunning, this didn't make up for her lacking dress. Fortunately, her acting is much better than her choice of outfit last night.

Solange Knowles

One of the worst-outfits-of-the-evening awards sadly goes to Solange Knowles. Usually, this woman can pull off anything with her fabulous body and flamboyant hair, but I highly doubt that anyone could ever style out this Christian Siriano gown. It's hard to mention anything about this dress other than that it is nowhere near as beautiful as the lady wearing it... it also matches her lipstick?

Felicity Jones

Her performance in The Theory of Everything was outstanding, but her dress? Not so much. Although this Alexander McQueen silver gown is not the worst on the list, it surely isn't the best. The top embellished half looks restrictive and suffocating, while the skirt is much too puffy! Such a beautiful woman should have an equally beautiful outfit to match. Better luck next year, Felicity.

Laura Dern

This metallic Alberta Ferretti gown tried to be a futuristic frock, but failed and ended up looking like the worst kind of retro. Again, another fantastic actress wearing something that is totally wrong for her. The bold necklace and clutch are horrifically tacky, and the whole outfit is slightly awkward.

Octavia Spencer

Great actress. Unflattering dress. There seems to be a theme here. Previous Oscar winner Octavia Spencer didn't wow the crowds in this baby blue Tadashi Shoji. However, one thing I will say is that the colour suits her perfectly.

Best

Reese Witherspoon

Finally—someone who got it totally right! The 38 year old blonde bombshell stunned in this classic Tom Ford dress. The figure-hugging, white gown with black detailing suited Reese down to a T, and accentuated those curves to a perfection. Her stylist deserves a round of applause.

Melanie Griffith and Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson brought her mother and Hollywood icon Melanie Griffith along last night, and boy did they look amazing! Dakota opted for a red Saint Laurent gown with a sexy side slit and diamond shoulder, while Melanie breathed elegance with a slim-fitting black number.

Margot Robbie

This girl can truly do no wrong. The black Saint Laurent gown, although could look average on some, looks flawless on the Aussie actress. With Margot's milk-like complexion and classic makeup, this look is a winner in my book. Well done, Miss Robbie!

Jennifer Lopez

J-Lo dazzled in this flesh-toned Elie Saab Haute Couture gown. Everything about this look is stunning, from her neutral makeup to the princess style skirt of the dress. For someone who gets a lot of hate from the fashion police, this outfit outshone many others last night.

Meryl Streep

Last, but certainly not least, is Meryl Streep outdoing everyone in this Lanvin set. The queen of cinema makes a winning effort in this outfit, even though she is decades older than most who attended the Academy Awards. She proves that age means absolutely nothing when it comes to style and grace. If I look like her when I'm sixty-five, I will have won at life. Congrats, Meryl!

Not forgetting the gents...

Neil Patrick Harris

This year's Oscar host Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka both looked super dapper on the red carpet.

Chris Pine

Into the Woods star Chris Pine looked rather handsome last night in this classic suit and bow-tie look.

Eddie Redmayne

Newly married Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne looked stylish in his navy blue Alexander McQueen suit. Congrats, Eddie!
